Several states have small business government grants. These are not offered by the federal government but a number of state-run development agencies provide free government grants. The states that offer these are Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Utah. Other states provide financing through loans with incentives to those who want to start a small business rather than free government grants.
Instead of money the government will give free advice and training to those who want to make their business grow. The United States Government’s Small Business Administration (SBA) is where the free government grants originate from. Since fifty percent of the labor force comes from the twenty five million small businesses in the United States and that contributes more than half contributes to more than half of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), there isn’t much question why the government is interested in the quandary of the small businessman.
The free government grants come with free counseling, training, and technical assistance. The Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) have full and part time staff that will get help from the private sector to give the business whatever help that they need. This help usually comes in the form of consultants, engineers, and testing laboratories. The grants offered can be found in the Catalog for Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) website http://www.sfda.gov under the “Small Business” and “Small Business Person” beneficiary category. You can browse this free government grants for small business at CFDA free of charge.
The SBA has no funds of its own actually available to supply to small businesses. They depend on the private sector such as banks, credit unions, coops, etc. to provide loans then they guarantee the loans. These loan programs are Loan Guaranty Programs, SBA LowDoc Loans, SBA Express Loans, and Microloan Programs. Targeted Loan Programs are also offered such as defense-delta loans, CAIP loans, Pollution control loans, and Export Express Loans. These loans are meant to target or meet specific needs. Since these places are all ready aware of the SBA you only need to mention SBA for the banks etc. to know immediately what to do.
While free government grants could of course be very useful to any business. The help that a business receives need not be money to be useful. The advice that a business receives can be just as invaluable. The professional service could be worth more than money itself. As the old line says “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.” The success of these businesses can only be beneficial to the government in the long run so the advice given is definitely the best.

where can i find out about government grants and do they work?
There are no grants for a for profit business unless you are opening a daycare and then it is a minimal amount. If you need money, you will need to apply for a loan. No lender will talk to you unless you provide them with a valid business plan. Go to http://www.sba.gov , http://www.score.org or http://www.bplan.com for sample business plans and instructions on how to write a business plan.
Then, go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to review your business plan and discuss various loan options available to you.
SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

Consolidating debt is a process that consists on replacing expensive and/or short term debt with cheap debt with longer repayment programs. Basically, consolidation can be achieved either by negotiating with creditors new loan terms or by obtaining a loan that meets the above guidelines (cheaper and/or longer term) to repay outstanding debt.
Thus, getting a government grant in order to eliminate debt can never be “debt consolidation”. Besides, it is very unlikely that the government would destine money to repay someone’s debt with no guarantee whatsoever that the borrower won’t apply for new loans or credit cards.
Government Grants
A government grant is an endowment awarded by government agencies to individuals and organizations that meet certain requirements. Government grants are meant for assisting those who are underprivileged or have special needs. Someone who is deeply in debt does not necessarily have to qualify for a grant for the sole reason of being in debt.
Government grants are offered for those who want to buy their first home, to those who are starting a business and need finance in order to make everything work, to those who want to investigate on certain fields that the government has a particular interest on developing, etc.
Specific Requirements
In order to apply for a government grant you need to meet specific requirements that each grant type has as a qualifying criteria. So, as you can see, offering grants for debt consolidation widely, to anyone that wants to apply has no other purpose than to take advantage of people’s financial difficulties. That financial aid cannot be provided by those who claim they can.
And that’s the main reason why you need to beware of those companies that offer that kind of service. There are many legit online companies offering access to information, links and thorough explanations on government grants. Sometimes they even offer copies of the application forms and models of letters that need to be sent to government agencies. However, none of these companies will claim to offer consolidation through government grants. If they do, you should steer clear of them since chances are you are probably facing a scam.
There are trustworthy government and private online sites
If you are alert enough, you have nothing to worry about. You can do a thorough investigation by searching the net for government grants and read all the information that online sites provide. You’ll be able to find the government agencies’ sites and private sites too. Within these sites you’ll be able to find all you need to know to apply for a government grant and as long as you follow the previous advice and be wary of consolidation grants you won’t be taken in.

Looking for a site that easily helps with the search for government grants for first time home buyers.
Each state has programs for lower income home buyers. They don't have to be first timers, just make below the average income. Of course there are credit requirements to take advantage of the programs (the rule of thumb is that if you can qualify FHA you are good to go). These programs usually have downpayment assistance of at least $5,000. I provided the link for Wisconsin below.

I am a widow, my husband passed away from cancer and I need the security of my own home. I want to go through the government to get a grant to buy one. Does anyone know what sites to go directly to or where I can start? My entire world has fallen apart and I really need this sense of security of not having to worry about paying rent. I heard that there were special grants for widows, but I don't know where to go to to find them.
I have never heard of a grant for widows. There are so many widows that the tax burden would be horrid.
But, you are welcome to look. The government grants are in a searchable database, grants.gov
I will see if I can find one, just to see where my tax $ may be going.
